Ever get hungry for a nice, fresh, juicy piece of fruit only to find all those tiny flies covering it. It can take away that mouth watering goodness in a matter of moments! I have read a number of post other people have written about trying this and trying that. I found little results when I tried them. So, being the smart blond that I am, I decided to mix them together. And guess what... It worked!!

All those dark specks are fruit flies! Gross!! |
What did I do? Well, first I found a cereal bowl and put 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1/4 cup of red wine vinegar in it. I then added one squirt of dish soap and filled the rest with water until the suds reached the top of the bowl. I placed it in the middle of the fruit fly buffet and as if on cue, they swarmed it. In about 5 minutes there were a dozen flies floating in the sudsy pool party. The picture above is after a few hours of sitting. Once the suds deflate (like in the above pic) just dump and remix.
Next time those flies get to be a bother, give it a try. Besides it doesn't get much harder than dumping stuff in a bowl and walking away.

would it work without the red wine vinegar? Cause I have the apple cider vinegar and the soap. :)

I honestly didn't try it with just the ac vin. Give it a try, can't hurt to try. I had only tried the rw vin alone and it didn't do anything amazing. Let me know if you try it!
DeleteI just use apple cider vinegar, soap and water. Never occurred to me to use the red wine vinegar. Doesn't seem to make much difference. My personal best is 31 in one bowl! Of course, that was the year that I put all the apple peels from sauce-making on the back porch and forgot about them for a week...
Delete31... not bad. In the above pic I stopped counting when I hit 40. I couldnt believe there were over forty in the house as it was! It seemed like there were only a hand full till I set the bowel out.
DeleteWhat a great tip ! I hope you will link up with my party: http://fresh-eggs-daily.blogspot.com/2012/09/farm-girl-friday-blog-fest-1.html
ReplyDeleteI have been fighting fruit flies for over a month since I started going to the farmer's market for fresh produce. They were almost gone, then the hubby brought home bananas and they tripled again! Do you have any tips for keeping fruit flies away when there are bananas around? They seem to come in with them, and multiply on them. I can't keep them away when there are bananas around. I can't wait to go home and try this, though!
ReplyDeleteAh, Heather, If only I knew how to keep them away!!! I wish I could make that possible. For now I have to make do with the vinegar mix, however, if you find out let me know!!!
